After a career as a competitive alpine ski racer Stephen was totally burned out on the sport. Since the age of 12, he spent the majority of his life racing and training throughout North America and Europe. When he finished his racing career as a NCAA division 1 athlete, Stephen never wanted to put a race suit on again.
After graduating from St. Lawrence University with a B.A. in Government Stephen spent the next year as a coach for the race program at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid where he attended high school. Despite being through as a ski racer himself and a year away from competition, he knew something was missing. Stephen had been programmed to be an athlete his entire life. That summer Stephen watched Ironman USA in Lake Placid. He knew very little about the sport of triathlon but after watching the race for the day he told himself “I could do that.” The next year, in 2006, Stephen was on the starting line, a totally naive triathlon newbie. At the finish line, Stephen swore he would never do another one…But he was hooked!
The upcoming 2013 season will be his eighth year in the sport and his best!
Over the years Stephen has become a better and smarter athlete. He has come to realize how important all aspects of training and racing are especially with regards to fueling. The right fueling can make or break your big day…it has done both for him! This is why Stephen started his coaching business, Placid Pirate Racing, and is very excited to be associated with KickStart Endurance!
